How to play

1. The chain

Four words of four letters are joined end to end. Each word's last two letters become the next word's first two — so the whole thing is really one 10-letter string, not four separate words.

Fourfeits uses a curated player-facing dictionary of familiar four-letter English words. It is an editorial list, not a claim about whether a spelling exists elsewhere. You can check any word before using it, without spending an interim check or revealing anything about today’s solution.

2. Given letters vs. blanks

Some boxes are already filled in (shown on parchment) — those are free. The rest are yours to work out from the pattern and how the words interlock.

3. Checking your answers

Fill in as many or as few blanks as you like, then tap Check entered letters. Every filled box gets scored:

right letter, right spot — locks in

right letter, wrong spot — try elsewhere

not in any remaining blank

Green boxes lock permanently. Amber and gray boxes stay editable for your next attempt.

4. Daily score

Your daily result is based on how many interim checks you need:

💎 Diamond — solve without an interim check
🥇 Gold — use 1 check
🥈 Silver — use 2 checks
🥉 Bronze — use all 3 checks

After your third check, you still get one final answer. Get it right and you earn Bronze; get it wrong and the chain is revealed.

5. Difficulty

Each day is graded Easy, Medium or Hard. The grade considers the number and spread of givens, how much each clue narrows the complete-chain network and how restrictive the two-letter joins are — not simply the raw number of letters shown.

6. The Fourfeits Dictionary

Reasonable people will disagree about borderline words. Fourfeits therefore publishes its own playable vocabulary. If the checker says a word is accepted, a legitimate chain containing it must be accepted by the game. If it says “Not currently in the Fourfeits Dictionary”, the word will not count in the current version.

A missing word is not being declared “not English”; it is simply outside the current Fourfeits list. You can suggest it for a future review.

7. Alternative legitimate chains

Every scheduled puzzle is exhaustively tested to leave exactly one accepted complete chain. If you nevertheless find a different complete chain made entirely from accepted Fourfeits words and matching all the givens, it counts as a solve. You will be congratulated and the puzzle can be flagged for review.

8. Limited play statistics

To improve difficulty calibration, Fourfeits may submit a small gameplay record when a day finishes: puzzle/date, outcome, elapsed time, checks used, reveal use and error positions. The game does not ask for a name or email as part of this record and does not use advertising identifiers or browser fingerprinting.

Check when you choose

Fill as much or as little as you like, then check the letters you have entered.

Green: right letter, right place—locked in.

Amber: right letter, wrong blank.

Grey: not used in any remaining blank.

You have up to three interim checks before your final answer.

Fewer checks, brighter medal

Solve the chain with no interim check for Diamond. Using a check is helpful—but changes the medal you can earn.
