Four words of four letters are joined end to end. Each word's last two letters become the next word's first two — so the whole thing is really one 10-letter string, not four separate words.
Fourfeits uses a curated player-facing dictionary of familiar four-letter English words. It is an editorial list, not a claim about whether a spelling exists elsewhere. You can check any word before using it, without spending an interim check or revealing anything about today’s solution.

After your third check, you still get one final answer. Get it right and you earn Bronze; get it wrong and the chain is revealed.
Each day is graded Easy, Medium or Hard. The grade considers the number and spread of givens, how much each clue narrows the complete-chain network and how restrictive the two-letter joins are — not simply the raw number of letters shown.
Reasonable people will disagree about borderline words. Fourfeits therefore publishes its own playable vocabulary. If the checker says a word is accepted, a legitimate chain containing it must be accepted by the game. If it says “Not currently in the Fourfeits Dictionary”, the word will not count in the current version.
A missing word is not being declared “not English”; it is simply outside the current Fourfeits list. You can suggest it for a future review.
Every scheduled puzzle is exhaustively tested to leave exactly one accepted complete chain. If you nevertheless find a different complete chain made entirely from accepted Fourfeits words and matching all the givens, it counts as a solve. You will be congratulated and the puzzle can be flagged for review.
To improve difficulty calibration, Fourfeits may submit a small gameplay record when a day finishes: puzzle/date, outcome, elapsed time, checks used, reveal use and error positions. The game does not ask for a name or email as part of this record and does not use advertising identifiers or browser fingerprinting.
Four four-letter words overlap. The last two letters of each word are the first two letters of the next.
